This is one of the easiest ways to do a built in that I have ever build. Using stock cabinets for a big box store. That made this process crazy fast! I love that they come with hardware and doors to hide any extra clutter.
This whole build was for my sons room. He has been patiently waiting while I redo his sisters rooms and now its his turn. This is what the room looked like before -
I knew we had a big task ahead of us to turn this into something clean and organized that made him feel safe and calm as well as show his personality. We decided to start with these cabinets HERE
I started with an upper kitchen cabinet because its only 12" deep and wouldn't take up too much room in his space next to his bed. After I got the base painted and installed, I built the top shelves. I used MDF But this was super difficult to use. I normally go with plywood but was trying to save a bit of money. I think I would recommend using the ply if you decide to build something similar.
I did make the depth of the shelves 1/2" shallower then the cabinet in order to leave room for the face frame and trim.
I just used pocket holes and glue to attach everything and then painted. To see the whole process and how I attached it to the wall you can watch the youtube video here.
Please make sure to check back later to see how the rest of the room comes together. So many fun projects in this space.
